Japan pushes large economies on climate change

At the UN climate summit in New York, Japan’s new PM Hatoyama has urged leading economies to get on board with climate change.

And in committing Japan to this, Hatoyama pledged that Japan will reduce emissions by 25 per cent by 2020 based on 1990 levels – a huge goal to achieve in just over 10 years.

Hatoyama received energetic applause not just for these ambitious targets, but also for stating his belief that larger economies (the US and China, who emit considerably more than Japan) need to step up.
